As a youngster Joe Cole was eye catching however as a mature pro he did not, imho ,match up to the likes of Rio, Carrick and Lampard. Rice is going to join those three for sure in terms of a career.

If were to pick my personal best West Ham eleven of English players Devonshire would be in it but not Joe Cole.

Dev by a long way

but if Cole was born 10 years later its likely he would have had an even better career than he did. When he came through no one was playing with a number 10. It was either 4-4-2 or one up top with someone in the MAKELELE role with wingers. Then everyone (except Oafadyce and others prehistoric cunts) played with a 10 and Cole would have been perfect for it.

Devonshire was an elegant player incapable of making an ungracious movement.

Cracking player Joe. But when Devo got the ball, he thrilled me in a way no other player has, including Sir Trev, Paulo and Payet.

Not at all Gank, read NS post which I replied to. You might understand my comment after that. People like you are the reason this site has gone to shit. I can hardly be bothered with it anymore. I am a true West Ham supporter.

Payet? That prick played about 40 games for West Ham in his life, you've got some nerve mentioning his name on this threat Isolated Hammer.

Cole not in the same league as Devonshire.
Imagine Dev playing on the billiard table pitches of today he'd be world class.

2002 took my boy who idolised joe Cole. I said watch scholes today. He’s been out for 6 weeks. He doesn’t do drag backs or try and nutmeg people. He gets it down gets it wide and gets on the end of it. They beat us 5-3 he scored one and made 2. Cole didn’t have a shot and hardly got in the box

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
NS, I disagree mate. You really do have to put Payet in there as well. But this thread isn't about that. This is about Cole and Devo and Dev wins all day long.

Coley was excellent...

Dev 79-84 was imperious.... only PDC in his pomp can compare for getting off your seat'edness

Cole was very skillful, but no football brain.
Alan was the full package, great player. Much better than Cole.

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
No chance.
Devo was class. Coley was a talented youngster and tricky, but didn’t impact a game as much as he should ave. Fucked about with it too much at times.

Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
I often wonder how Joe would have developed if he'd played under an attack minded manager rather than Mourinho during his peak years. Undoubtedly he had a good career, but didn't feel he lived up to the potential he showed.

isolated hammer 7:53 Sat Mar 13
Re: Joe Cole better than Alan Devonshire.
Absolutely no chance. Dev was an absolute one off who was absolutely brilliant alongside Sir Trev and equally brilliant thereafter. Joe Cole may have won things with Chelsea but Dev won an FA Cup against all the odds. No comparison. Devo alk day long.

Joe Cole was very good never fulfilled his potential. Devonshire was brilliant despite a horrific injury.

I'm thinking of the away game, when they took us to extra time AND penalties.
